A special design created in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the iconic victorian pier in Saltburn-by-the-Sea on the North East coast of England. This print is a available for a limited time only. The original paper cut artwork was shown at Saltburn Open Studios on the 12th May 2019.
A project ran by Palace Arts which invited artists to create art on the back of an envelope. You could use any medium on any size, shape or colour envelope. All submitted envelopes were displayed in an exhibition in Palace Arts Gallery from the 15th February - 17th March 2019. I chose to experiment with my favourite technique of paper cutting to created a little collection of three designs, all of which included gold, Patternations signature colour.
This year I completed the advanced track of Winter School. My final submitted patterns are now available to view in the Make It In Design online galleries. Links to the galleries can be found below.
Creative Brief 1 - Heritage Heroes - Scarf Prints
For this brief I had to design a print for a scarf taking inspiration from vintage and traditional prints. I was encouraged to look at paisley and damask motifs and aim for luxurious and sophisticated pattern incorporating colours from a rich palette I was provided.

I developed my ‘GROW BLOOM FLOURISH’ design created originally for the Global Talent Search to make a new collection for OHH DEER.
‘GROW BLOOM FLOURISH’ was my entry for the Global Talent Search. The brief was to create a design suitable for the cover of a Gardener Journal. Text was a highly recommended feature, this was something very new to me. It proved to be a very popular design.
I was asked to create a portrait in my own style for an exhibition. I enjoyed the challenge of creating a paper cutwork face, something which l have never attempted before. My portrait titled 'THIS IS ME' was display in a studio artists group show at Saltburn Studios and Gallery from October 2018 to January 2019.
Geometric inspired designs created for the Wraptious cushion competition.
I really enjoyed taking part in the Make It In Design Winter School online course in which surface designers are set a number of design briefs and challenges by trend forecasters Patternbank. The school founded by surface designer and illustrator Rachel Taylor and successful entrepreneur Beth Kempton helps pattern designers to build their portfolios, provides opportunities to have work published and seen by companies within the surface design industry, as well as offering a chance connect with other designers. During the four weeks of Winter School there were a number of competitions to get involved in and I was delighted to discover that I was the winner of Trend Brief 1, automatically securing myself a place on the next school due to take place in the summer.
For Winter School I completed a total of six creative briefs, submitting a pattern for each brief. Please see below brief titles, development and my final patterns. Click on images of the final patterns to view them in the MIID online galleries.

I alongside other members of the community had the privilege of working with artist Katie Schwab on a project commissioned by MIMA in Middlesbrough. The project involved helping to design and make a curtain to hang in the shop which is located in the stunning atrium of MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art).
I was lucky enough to be one of 26 artists selected to take part in this unique project. An Artists’ Alphabet was a remarkable exhibition, the first of its kind to be held at Palace Arts. Each chosen artist was randomly assigned a letter of the alphabet and asked to make work in response to that letter. The result was an exhibition of both two and three-dimensional work, featuring a never seen before piece of work by myself which I made especially for this show. A book was also published to accompany the exhibition and is available in both printed and e-book formats.
Do you C what I C? is a length of contemporary wallpaper crafted by hand, featuring a pattern constructed entirely with the curved contours of the letter C. The intricately cut pattern is heavy at the top of the paper but disperses into a crisp minimalist design as it cascades down the wall, with sporadically placed cellophane adding colour to the piece. I wanted my work to be completely about what you can see. Can you spot the C’s? How many do you see? If you look carefully through the cut out shapes, are shadows of C’s cast onto the wall behind? Are the shadows colourful? There is soo much to look at, soo much to C.

I worked with glass artist Christine Graham to create something completely for christmas 2016. Introducing my first ever range of glass decorations and homewares. Trapped inside these handmade baubles are my paper cut works. Each bauble and coaster is unique with no two designs the same, some include sparkles of christmas glitter too. These glass pieces were displayed and sold at the 2016 Christmas Exhibition at Saltburn Studios and Gallery. They were also available to order through my online shop and proved to be very popular.
A collaborative project involving myself alongside 12 other artists from Saltburn Studios and Gallery. Each of the 13 artists started with a blank canvas, each artist had to work onto their canvas. Every few weeks we would meet up, explain to the group what we had created and why. We would then swap our canvases and work on that one before meeting up and swapping the canvases again. We repeated this process for almost a year until each artist had worked on each of the canvases. The end result was interesting, however the development of the canvases was what made the project so fascinating. Each stage of the canvases development was photographed and recorded and should soon be available to view as part of the 'Canvas Carousel Exhibition' due to open in 2017, watch this space for details.
Just to give you a taste of the project, below are images of the 13 canvases in the order I received them. The first image shows the canvas before I worked on it and the second image shows the canvas after I had worked on it. This is just one stage in the development of the artworks, to see more visit our exhibition opening soon at Saltburn Studios and Gallery.
A festive range including cards, baubles, phone covers and homeware.
Saltburn Studios in which Patternations Studio is based, were asked by Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) if we would like to exhibit our work in the gallery as part of their Lucalism show. Of coures we jumped at the chance and said yes!
It was a little bit of a challenged curating the cases in which the work of 17 completely different artists needed to fit, but we got there in there in the end. The work of Saltburn Studios artists was on display in the gallery for four full weeks from 10th November until the 6th December. What an amazing opportunity it was for us all. Thank you mima!

My little Sketchbook Project sketchbook was completed and posted back to Brooklyn from where it began on it's tour of America. At the end of the tour my little cut work book will return back to Brooklyn Art Library where it will remain on permanent display for people to scan out and view.
The theme of my Sketchbook this year was City Lights. It mainly featured cut work mixed with some painting and drawing. My aim was to make light the focus throughout my sketchbook by creating multiple layers the pages project patterns and cast shadows themselves.
